Piers Morgan and Stupid

Piers Morgan calls a pro-gun advocate stupid on live television and becomes the darling of the liberals in the US. Wherever you stands on gun control, this is the kind of thing that should worry you. Name calling is increasingly taking the place of debate in Western society. If someone doesn't agree with you, the only possible reason is that they must be an idiot. No need to make an actual argument - it's not like they could understand.

Lack of courtesy is a bad road to travel. Jesus had something to say about name calling. In Matthew 5 he said if you called someone 'Racca' (idiot) it was equivalent to murder. Mr Morgan is on record as saying he is a Christian, so perhaps this is something for him to bear in mind next time he is tempted to replace rational argument with insults.

    2. Love your enemies & catch more flies with honey than vinegar, I say ... dehumanising others made in the image & likeness of God is never a good game-plan, no matter how much you disagree with them.

  2. Hrm - I wasn't aware that the implication of Jesus' words meant that. Interesting!

I very much agree that the fact that folks tend to rally around name-calling as if it were any sort of real argumentation is troubling. Ad-hominem attacks are rampant, and folks really truly believe they're justified in acting so juvenile. Boggles my mind.

  3. Hi Gina,
perhaps I spoke too strongly when I said 'equivalent to murder' ... or perhaps not. What Jesus is recorded as saying in Matthew 5. 21-23 is ‘You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, “You shall not murder”; and “whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.” But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, “You fool”, you will be liable to the hell of fire.'

That puts anger and name-calling and insults within the parameters of the commandment & subject to God's judgement. Also, often when people seek to label others, whether as idiots, or bigots, or the wrong race, or whatever, they are seeking to de-humanise them ... think of abortion ... how much easier it is to kill the child after denying his/her humanity ... the labeling makes the murder easier ... Morgan calls people stupid so he doesn't have to deal with the arguments they make ... they are beneath him ...
