prayer diary Friday 25 Oct 2013 (day of discipline and self-denial)

'you know how to interpret the appearance of sea & sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?'
Luke 12. 56

When Christ spoke these words, it was to wonder at those who failed to understand who he was and what it meant for the world. If he were here today, would he have any reason to speak any differently of us?

  1. I heard this reading in Mass today, and (though I'd heard it many times before) was hit by a new thought. Many people say they are agnostic through a lack of evidence. But have they really, truly looked? Human beings perform fantastic feats of judgement and critical thinking in matters that are important to them, like their health and their career. If we miss any opportunity to understand the ultimate meaning of life....what are we doing? It often strikes me that people who are extremely inquisitive and probing in so many worldly things are willing to remain agnostic in religion.
